Welcome to Otres Beach, Cambodia
Otres Beach is the place to chill out in Sihanoukville. It is not crowded as other beaches and has a great local atmosphere, making it attractive to the more laid back traveler. Spend your time here lounging on the beach and walking around town. This is also a great place to plan your trip to the islands or to elsewhere in Cambodia. As I had just come from this island of Koh Rong Samloem, my next move was a five hour van ride to Phnom Penh.
To save money and to have a more authentic experience, eat at one of the many local restaurants rather than the guesthouses. You can spot them by their big red Angkor signs. The smaller stands typically serve food as well. One of them called Mom's specifically has a great deal on fried rice - I believe $1 for a big plate.
I stayed with my boyfriend at Chez Paou as they provided the best combination of low price and clean rooms. We paid $15 per night for a private bungalow steps away from the beach. If you want a cheaper option, there are many lower-end bungalows for as little as $10 a night. For me, as it was almost the end of my trip, I opted to pay a little more for a room where I would be more comfortable.
For some insight, one of the "no" rooms had a huge cockroach crawling on the wall right over the bed, one looked like how would would imagine a brothel, and one was just plain dark and dirty. On the other hand, there were very nice places as well that were way out of budget.
If this had been during the solo part of my trip, I would have stayed in a dorm at the hostel Wish You Were Here. It seems to fill up, and once in guests can stay as long as they would like. I was told to come in and check for availability at 11am (check-out time) on the day I would like to begin my stay.
